The review includes captivating short stories\, award-winning book excerpts and first chapters\, and poignant poetry taken from CWA’s online magazine The Write City Magazine. The book also contains beautiful color photography from around the world and detailed pen and ink and pastel drawings. Writers featured in the review will be on hand to read their pieces during the Summer Social. Additionally\, copies of both The Write City Review and The Write City Review Volume Two will be available for purchase. \nThe evening’s event will be hosted by the inimitable Bill Turck! \nBill Turck\, WCGO Radio \nWC Turck is the host of Playtime with Bill Turck and Kerri Kendall\, Chicago’s only commercial radio program dedicated to the Arts. Turck began as a visual Artist\, studying under the master sculptor Milton Horn. In 1989\, he was among the first Chicago Artists to support the Chinese pro-democracy movement in Tienanmen Square. In 1993\, he traveled to Bosnia as a witness to the genocide. His memoir\, Everything for Love recalls his experiences there. Later he helped organize over 20 tons of relief supplies to Rwanda. \nHis first novel\, Broken\, One Soldier’s Unexpected Journey Home\, was recommended by the National Association of Mental Health Institutes for its subtext about PTSD. He published two more novels and has six more as yet unpublished. \nIn the autumn of 2014\, relying on nearly two decades in the airline industry\, Turck completed his investigative piece on the downing of Malaysian Airlines Flt-17. A TRAGIC FATE: Politics\, Oil\, the Crash of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 and the Looming Threats to Civil Aviation beat the official account by almost nine months\, and remains today the most accurate and comprehensive work on the disaster. Turck is also a playwright with two successful plays which garnered national media attention. SUMMARY:Winter Loop Tour
DESCRIPTION:IWPA members\, non-members and guests are invited to join us as we venture out into the Windy City to explore the Loop during the winter! We will spend half of the time outdoors looking up at skyscrapers and the other half will be spent inside exquisite public buildings and lobbies. \nDefined by the elevated train lines that form a circuit in the heart of the city\, the Loop is Chicago’s downtown area and commercial core\, home to big names such as Boeing and IBM. But\, it’s so much more. The Loop contains the largest concentration of skyscrapers\, including the tallest in the United States (not counting spires) and it is effectively a living architectural museum\, with a large range of architectural styles\, from Victorian to post-modern\, many with grand interior spaces. \nWe’ll learn about how the Great Fire of 1871 started\, and marvel at the modern city that rose upon the ashes of that disaster. DESCRIPTION:In 1889\, world-renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright completed the construction of a small two-story residence in Oak Park on the Western edges of Chicago. The building was the first over which Wright exerted complete artistic control. Designed as a home for his family\, the Oak Park residence was a site of experimentation for the young architect during the twenty-year period he lived there. DESCRIPTION:Illinois Woman’s Press Association is proud to participate in Chicago Women in Publishing’s annual Fall Kickoff event to celebrate the beginning of CWIP’s 2017/2018 programming year. Our sister organization is pleased to welcome memoirist Jian Ping\, also know as Jennifer Kwong\, as the event’s keynote speaker. \nJian Ping is the author of Mulberry Child: A Memoir of China (2008). It tells the story of her coming of age and her family’s struggle during China’s Cultural Revolution. In 2011\, the book was adapted into an award-winning documentary film\, which was broadcasted nationally on PBS for three consecutive years. \nEach attendee receives a drink ticket along with one raffle ticket to win a one-year CWIP membership or any of the many other prizes available. Click here to access our Wikipedia page for Fanny’s IWPA story. \nFanny Butcher: (September 13\, 1888 – May 1887)\, for four decades a writer and critic for the Chicago Tribune\, will be inducted into the Chicago Literary Hall of Fame on May 11\, 2017 at Newberry Library‘s Ruggles Hall. Liesl\, Olson will give the keynote presentation\, and John Bokum will accept the award on his aunt’s behalf. Elizabeth Taylor\, Linda Bubon\, IWPA’s Historian and Archivist Marianne Wolf-Astrauskas\, Toni Nealie and Emily Victorson will also give tributes. \nGuests are encouraged to arrive an hour before the program start for refreshments and a chance to view the Butcher exhibit (including highlights from the Fanny Butcher Papers). Co-sponsors for the event include the Chicago Literary Hall of Fame\, Newberry Library\, The Guild Literary Complex\, Chicago Writers Association. \n\nButcher moved to Chicago as a child and graduated from the University of Chicago. Throughout her career at the Tribune\, she worked as a society editor\, club editor\, crime reporter\, and fashion editor. SUMMARY:First Amendment Network Event: Protected Speech in the Trump Era
DESCRIPTION:The 45th President of the United States has articulated a narrow interpretation of the First Amendment that includes stricter limits on press freedom and harsh penalties for civil disobedience. While some journalists predict the next four years will be “a new low in American democracy” when it comes to freedom of\, and respect for a strong\, independent “fourth branch” of the government\, what are the real implications for 1A in the Trump era? \nAt the same time\, traditional notions about the press’ role are being challenged by the proliferation of “news” on the social media networks that Americans increasingly use as a primary source of information.  Un-curated and free from the restrictions imposed by conventional publishers\, this new type of speech creates unique challenges for established 1A standards. \nWhat does the First Amendment look like in the emerging post-election world? Attorney\, professor\, writer\, consultant and IWPA’s First Amendment Network Contact Kate Danna will lead members\, students and guests in an important discussion of the issues. DESCRIPTION:Chicago Women in Publishing (CWIP) Educational Event: Manuscript Editing   \n Join Chicago Women in Publishing on January 18 for the nonprofit’s first educational event of the calendar year. Led by CWIP’s current president and vice president\, the program will delve into a topic vital to the publishing industry: manuscript editing. \nEditing has tremendous impact on a book’s quality and marketability. With the ultimate goal of helping the author create a compelling\, top-notch book that appeals to the target audience\, a good editor is invisible in the end product. If you are an editor or author who wants to learn more about the different types of manuscript editing and the differences between developmental editing for fiction versus nonfiction manuscripts\, then this CWIP educational event is for you. \nPast CWIP president and copy editor Kim Bookless will explain the various types of editing and the importance of a good author-editor relationship. She was a founder for many important institutions such as the social settlement Hull-House\, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)\, and National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). She was the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931.
