When your word must be gold as is
true in the journalism and public relations professions, proper ethics is more than a
tool. It's a foundation.
Richard Schwartzlose, professor at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, will reprise a talk he gave Medill alumnae for the Illinois Woman's Press Association annual awards luncheon May 19 at the Courtyard by Marriott.
"Doing the right thing in the community," will be the topic of Schwartzlose's talk, which will include simulated and real situations for audience participation, similar to his classes for freshman to graduate-level students at Medill.
Balancing the First Amendment right to cover news is the individual right of privacy, amid other crossover issues, Schwartzlose said.
He will discuss conflicts of interest in the newsroom as well as changing ethics imposed by the Internet. The latter, he said, has brought to news coverage "ambiguous ethics in a sense that there are a lot of people out there who have never given any thought to the fact that they are playing with other people's words, lives and reputations. They're just throwing anything up there."
