IWPA Makes Its Mark on NFPW 70th Anniversary Conference

This year’s conference marked the 70th anniversary of the National Federation of Press Women in Richmond, Va., with a festive celebration of our organization and the bold women who founded and shaped it. The quote, “Wellbehaved women seldom make history,” by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, was our mantra as we acknowledged our leaders of the past and future. Those participating in the IWPA-sponsored “Bold Women of the Past: Models for the Future” fashion show, wore pins with the Ulrich quote to create a “buzz” for the surprise feature of the Friday night dinner. As writer and fashion commentator, Marlene Cook featured the effects of world events on women’s lives and dress from 1880 through the future. The show was coordinated by mother-daughter team Cecilia Green, IWPA, and Jill Miller from Kansas Professional Communicators. Among the 22 models were:

Marlys Marshall Styne, depicting Jane Addams

Marianne Wolf Astrauskas, as a 1920’s flapper

Mary Ellen Kearns, a World War II WAVE

Cecilia Green, the 1940’s Rosie the Riveter

Cindy Cruz, a 1960’s “That Girl”

Suzanne Hanney, a multi-tasking modern journalist

Those who received national awards in the Communications Contest who were there to receive them in person were Cecilia Green, Pamela Dittmer McKuen, and Marlys Marshall Styne. Suzanne Hanney represented IWPA well as the nominee for the Communicator of Achievement, which was won by Peggyann Hutchinson of Oregon. And, to top it all off, Val Ensalaco was elected to the position of NFPW Treasurer after serving for two years as NFPW Secretary.

Outstanding keynote speakers included the Governor of Virginia, who was once the mayor of Richmond, and the current mayor of Richmond who was once the governor, and best-selling author Adriana Trigiani. Concurrent sessions followed three tracks, Lifestyle, Writing and Public Relations.
