Early June brought us to the Printers Row Lit Fest
(formerly Printers Row Book Fair). This huge event, sponsored
by the Chicago Tribune, is the largest free outdoor literary event
in the Midwest.
As usual, prior to this grand event, those familiar with
Chicago pay very close attention to the weather forecast. As
IWPA member Michele Weldon said after the wind-blown
event last year, “I hope everyone is OK. Goodness. Next year,
we wear helmets.” Her statement is truly indicative of the spirit
of the people of Chicago and in particular, the members of the
Illinois Women’s Press Association.
Although helmets weren’t necessary this year, the weather
man was still somewhat “uncooperative” as we dealt with a
distinct chill in the air and a periodic sprinkle of rain. But the
weather didn’t dampen the authors’ enthusiasm, nor did it cool the booklovers’ excitement to browse, to purchase books and to meet the authors. The midway, sidewalk thoroughfares and booths were buzzing with people looking for literary gifts, or a
book to provide a look into a place that their imagination can
play without bounds. I do believe that in nearly every case that
special and unique literary treasure was found.
