Sixteen IWPA members received a total of 21 national awards
in the NFPW 2009 Communications Contest. Six picked up
their
awards in person at the 2009 Awards Banquet in San
Antonio on
September 12:
* Val Ensalaco, 1st place community or institutional
relations for Superstitions Ball and 3rd place for
Crossroads newsletter, both for Franciscan Sisters
of
Chicago
* Suzanne Hanney, 3rd place special articles - social
issues, 3rd place special articles - government or
politics for Streetwise.
* Lynn Sellers-LaBuy, 3rd place news photo, for
“Rollover Crash” in Belvidere Daily Republican
*Diane Laux, 1st place for non-fiction book;
ghostwritten,

Suzanne Hanney, editor-in-chief
of Chicago’s StreetWise, won the
distinguished Silver Feather Award
for achieving the highest number of
points among all entrants in IWPA’s
2009 Mate E. Palmer Communications
Contest. She received four 1st
place awards, three 2nd place, and
one honorable mention for her entries
in the feature story, special articles,
columns, and editing categories.

StreetWise, a weekly publication sold by homeless vendors,
recently made the transformation from newspaper format to
magazine format under Hanney’s editorship. |

Lana Brown wins top award |

IWPA is proud to announce that Lana Brown, Vice President/
Programs, was the recipient of the
2009 Communicator of Achievement
Award. She represented Illinois as its nominee for the National
Communicator of Achievement
Award from the National Federation
of Press Women at its convention in September.
