Illinois Communicators Win National Awards
The National Federation of Press Women has announced the national winners in its annual communications contest. The 1,200 entries, all of which were first-place winners at the state level, competed in 92 major categories and were judged by 26 professionals and educators from across the country.
Of the 42 first-place state winners that Illinois Woman's Press Association sent on for national judging, 18 placed nationally. They are:
Patricia Aylward, William Blair & Co, Chicago--3rd place for "Inside William Blair" newsletter
Jacqueline Bitowt, Society of Actuaries, Schaumburg--2nd place for media press kit "Actuaries look to the Millennium"
Olga Gize Carlile, assistant managing editor of the Freeport Journal-Standard--2nd place for essays, 2nd place for food articles, and a 3rd place for a photo essay.
Val Ensalaco, corporate vice president, institutional advancement, at Franciscan Sisters of Chicago in Lemont--1st place in direct mail marketing for "20th Century Flashback"
Cecilia Green, director of integrated communications at the Society of Actuaries in Schaumburg--2nd place in institutional relations programs for "Society of Actuaries 50th Anniversary Celebration" and 3rd place in direct mail marketing for "Society of Actuaries 50th Anniversary Sponsorship Solicitation"
Ann Heinrichs, book author and copywriter, Chicago--1st place for retail catalog "'99 Spring Outdoor Event" for True Value Hardware, 1st place for direct mail marketing for "Pandora Collectible Teddy Bear" for Ashton-Drake Galleries, and 2nd place for nonfiction book for young adults, "New York," published by Children's Press.
Ann Martin, former education reporter and feature writer for Sun Publications in Plainfield--1st place for education articles and 2nd place for business articles.
Kristin Pichaske, manager, Creative Center, MSI Strategic Communications Chicago--1st place for a TV documentary "Get in the kNOw"
Caroline Porter, sole proprietor, Caroline Porter Ideas, Galesburg--1st for an editorial in The Zephyr
Nancy Shepherdson, freelance writer in Barrington--1st place for feature story "Drop the remote" on www.onhealth.com
Tina Valentino, president of InParticular, Inc. in Melrose Park--1st place in newsletter editing for "North Riversider" and 2nd place in external annual reports for "Veterans Park District Report of Accomplishments"
The list of all 324 national winners can be found on the NFPW Web site, www.nfpw.org. The most entered categories were feature stories, personality profiles, and columns in newspapers and other print publications. The awards will be presented Sept. 9 at the NFPW "Top of the World" Conference in Anchorage, Alaska.
