Recognizes Outstanding Student Work
The IWPA is sponsoring a high school journalism contest to encourage excellence in student work on school newspapers. Male and female students in grades 9 through 12 may enter published work in editorial, feature, news, sports, column, feature photo, cartooning, and single-page layout.
The contest is on the list of approved activities of the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Fees are $5 an entry and all entries must be postmarked by Feb. 16. All state winners are honored at the IWPA awards banquet, which will be held May 15 in Chicago. First place winners in the IWPA contest go on to the National Federation of Press Women contest to compete nationally.
All national winners, including honorable mention, receive certificates. First-place national winners receive $100 and second- and third-place winners receive plaques.
Last year, IWPA received nearly 200 entries, and Illinois had four national winners with two first-place awards, one second, and one honorable mention. We look forward to an equally impressive contest this year.
