Tim Bennett, president of Harpo Productions, will be the keynote speaker for the second Communications Information Career Fair to be held March 6 at Bradley University in Peoria, Ill.

Hosted by IWPA and Bradley, the fair is designed to show students the many career options available for communications majors, according to Margaret Young, a communications teacher at Bradley who is organizing the event.

Bennett will offer tips on breaking into the field of broadcast TV production. A videoconference with Lisa Helfrich, producer of the popular TV show, "Everyone Loves Raymond" also is planned but not yet confirmed, said Young.

Following the keynote address, participants will be able to attend six 30-minute sessions in which mentors will talk about their areas of expertise in informal roundtable settings. Last year, more that 40 communications careers were represented.

Mentors from Chicago, St. Louis, Indianapolis, and Central Illinois representing a variety of communications fields have already agreed to speak at this year‘s fair. Some of the categories to be covered include: multimedia careers, television and radio journalism, event planning, freelancing, sales, sole proprietorships, advertising, corporate public relations, and government.

If you are interested in updating your skills or are looking for new opportunities, attend the career fair and network with other mentors. Meet communicators from a variety of disciplines and make contacts for future opportunities.

"In conjunction with the fair, we will be putting out a booklet with the mentors’ names, e-mail addresses, and a short bio that introduces each participant," Young said. "This will help provide a beginning network for our students."

If you have a skill to share with students and other professionals, you might want to volunteer to speak.

The career fair is free to Bradley students. Other high school and full-time college students with IDs may attend for $5. Professionals pay $35, an ad in the program costs $25, and speakers receive a complimentary information booth.
