IWPA Awards Luncheon
"The Agony and the Ecstasy" Experiences of Doing PR for a World Series
Team
How did it feel to be the media's "go-to" person last year as Chicago's beloved White Sox made their way from underdogs to World Series champions? First-hand reflections will be offered by Sox public relations director Katie Kirby, keynote speaker for IWPA's Annual Awards Luncheon on Saturday, May 20.
Katie and her staff are responsible for increasing awareness and recognition of the club's marketing, advertising and sales efforts, as well as community relations initiatives and charity endeavors. On a day-to-day basis, they pursue placements promoting the club in non-traditional sports media, including television, magazines, print and new media. They also work to maximize non-sports and feature-type coverage in national, regional and local media and seek opportunities to promote the off-the-field efforts of the organization, its staff and its players. In addition to her contribution to White Sox communication efforts, including the team program, media guide, brochures and website, Katie also manages special media-focused events.
Katie is now in her sixth year with the White Sox. Before moving to Chicago, she worked in Denver where her sports clients included the United States Olympic Committee based in Colorado Springs. A 1996 graduate of Ohio University's E. W. Scripps School of Journalism, Katie was named Rookie of the Year by the Colorado Chapter of PRSA (the Public Relations Society of America) in 1998.
In addition to our special guest speaker, IWPA will also honor this year's Communications Contest Award winners, our High School Journalism Contest winners, and IWPA's nominee for the coveted National Federation of Press Women's Communicator of Achievement award. You won't want to miss the culminating event of our program year - a fabulous speaker, a delicious luncheon, presentation of awards, and networking with old and new friends.
