The Mate E. Palmer Communications Contest continues to grow, with 31
participants submitting 163 entries, 20 more than last year, according to Caroline Porter,
contest director for 2000.
Entries were submitted in 37 print media and photography categories, 18 print media, advertising and public relations, promotion and publicity in all media categories; and four book categories. The most popular categories were feature stories in non-daily newspapers with circulation of more than 5,000, personality profiles, and personal columns. Forty-two first-place entries were submitted for competition in the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW) contest.
Several prominent communicators served as this year's judges. The book entries were judged by William Brady, Knox College (Galesburg) professor of English emeritus, who previously taught at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Brown University, University of Chicago and Colorado College and lectured at Oxford University and University of Barcelona. He has written articles for popular and scholarly periodicals and newspapers and received Knox College's Burlington Northern Faculty Achievement Award.
Laura Lane, a senior reporter at the Herald Times in Bloomington, Ind., judged the print media and photography entries. Her beats have covered police, court and regional news and she has also worked as a copy editor and photographer. She has received awards from the NFPW, society of Professional Journalists, Associated Press, Hoosier State Press Association and Women's Press Club of Indiana.
Betsy Spethmann judged the categories of print media advertising, public relations, promotion, publicity and speeches as well as special programming for television. She is senior editor of Promo magazine, a national trade magazine focusing on promotional marketing, and previously worked for Brandweek and Advertising Age.
Awards will be presented at the May 20 luncheon at the Courtyard by Marriott, 30 E. Hubbard at State Street in Chicago.
