Mary A. Dempsey is Commissioner of the Chicago Public Library. Under her leadership, the library has expanded its public service hours to seven days a week at its three largest locations, constructed or renovated 28 full-service branch libraries and expanded services for children and adults.
In addition to managing the library's $11 million budget, Dempsey does on-air reviews on Network Chicago, a feature of WFMT 98.7 FM in Chicago.
How does the library make its selections? Where does it buy its books? What should you know as an author? As a publisher? Find out on Nov. 17!
Ann Heinrichs is the author of more than 50 published nonfiction books for children on topics ranging from historical profiles to geography and travelogues. Most recently, she signed a contract to write 52 books to be delivered at the rate of three per month. Six books into the process, she is going strong--and still has time to be an active member of IWPA. Not bad for a music major who never wanted to be a writer!
Heinrichs got into the business of writing because as she says, "After college, I was starving and needed money. I called the Chicago Reader and told them they needed classical music review. They said to write something, and if they liked it, they'd use it. I did, and they published it, and a check came in the mail. Then I saw that writing makes checks come in the mail. I had become a professional writer."
Heinrichs and the panel will share how to craft winning book proposals, how to market your books and more!
Authors, editors and publishers who attend are invited to sell their books--but must be present to participate. Tables are limited, so call today to reserve book space.
Call the IWPA hotline 312/458-9151 to make your reservation. Cost (includes lunch): IWPA members, students and guest accompanying members $25, other nonmembers $40. Payment (cash or check) may be made at the door.
Reminder: You can use the link to amazon.com though the www.IWPA.org web site to buy books online as well. A portion of the proceeds goes to IWPA!
