Illinois Women’s Press Association (since 1885) is an organization of communications professionals working in newspaper, radio, television, public relations, marketing, advertising, freelance writing, magazines, books, and other fields. IWPA is an affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women.

The IWPA offers:

. . .an organization of professional journalists and communicators. For 60 years we have promoted the highest ethical standards while looking toward the future in professional development, networking and protecting our First Amendment rights. Our objectives are to:

  • Keep members at the top of their abilities through dynamic seminars, exceptional networking opportunities and national publications with the hottest tips in the industry.
  • Recognize members’ achievement and their service through the nationally-acclaimed Professional Communications Contest and the Communicator of Achievement Award at both the state and national level.
  • Support youth activities and education with emphasis on ethics and editorial rights and responsibilities under the First Amendment. NFPW offers scholarships and holds the only nationwide high school writing contest.

Who can join NFPW?
"Professional communicators actively engaged in any aspect of communications for remuneration may be eligible for active membership." NFPW Bylaws
NFPW accepts professional communicators (women and men) who are employed in all arenas of the field of communications, at all levels of responsibility. We work for newspapers, magazines, radio and television stations, schools and colleges, government, corporations, nonprofit agencies and organizations or associations.
NFPW members are editors, writers, publishers, graphic designers, reporters, directors, marketers, photographers, advertising account executives, communications educators, public information officers, public relations practitioners, freelancers, and owners/managers of communications-related businesses.
Qualified applicants must apply for membership in NFPW and a state affiliate. Dues are paid annually. Student memberships are welcomed at a reduced cost and corporate memberships are also available.
